Time to aMend TTM? A literature review on the practice of targeted hypothermia in post-cardiac arrest comatose patients

Pharmacist CE:  This 2-hour, print or online monograph is a learning activity on Targeted Temperature Management (TTM).   It is a cooling process utilized after cardiac arrest to slow metabolic processes, ischemia, and tissue damage after achieving return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC). While early studies found beneficial outcomes from this practice, more recent studies have not confirmed these results and have demonstrated harms associated with induced hypothermia. This article reviews the historical and current practice of TTM, associated benefits and risks, recent trials questioning the ongoing role of TTM in medical practice, and potential changes to post-cardiac arrest care.
